Creating content

Content is created from the Create content link on the menu.

This then takes us to a page where we can select the type of content we wish to create, which is currently only either a Page or a Story. Content types can be created for almost any purpose, including things such as a Dino Recipe, to help our users create a great meal for their pets, or a Dino Playing Cart with stats and information on specific breeds of dinosaur.

Create content

A page, similar in form to a story, is a simple method for creating and displaying information that rarely changes, such as an "About us" section of a website. By defauit, a page entry does not allow visitor comments and is not featured on the site's initial home page.

A story, similar in form to a page, is ideal for creating and displaying content that informs or engages website visitors. Press releases, site announcements, and informal blog-like entries may all be created with a story entry. By default, a story entry is automatically featured on the site's initial home page, and provides the ability to post comments.

Let's select Page so that we can create the About us page.

In addition to entering content such as the Title and Body, we can also define the vocabulary settings, Menu settings and other settings for the page. The Split summary at the cursor button allows us to set the text above the cursor as a teaser (which is actually a snippet of content displayed on promoting the content to the front page), or on RSS feeds. If we select the taxonomy settings, we can see our two new vocabularies, where if appropriate we could select a breed of dinosaur, or enter a general tag for the content.

The menu option is quite important, so let's have a brief look at this now. We can't do a great deal with our sites menu at the moment as we only have provisions for some basic content (we will return to the menus later when we have our dynamic and user contributed areas all set up and ready).

o Menu settings

Menu link title:

The link text corresponding to this item that should appear in the

menu, Leave blank if you do not wish to add

this post to the menu ,

Parent item:

<Primary lrnks> ■*

The maximum depth For an item and all its children is Fixed at 3.

Some menu items may not be available as

parents if selecting them would exceed this limit,

0 ^

Optional. In the menur the heavier items will sink and the lighter

items will be positioned nearer the top.

Here, we can enter a name for the Menu link title, and select the Parent item in the menu. If we wanted this page to appear on the navigation menu, without a page as its parent, we would just select <Navigation> from the Parent item drop-down list, which then gives us a menu as shown in the following screenshot:

Try it yourself

«Xi—v We have created our first page! Why not try creating a few yourself? C ) Remember earlier we looked at blocks and menus? Why not create a ^ few pages for our secondary menu (such as copyright page, terms and conditions page, and so on) and place the menu in our site's footer?
